Can someone see that you viewed their Instagram story?

Updated

Short answer

Yes, if you watch from your Instagram account. The owner can see every account that viewed a story for 48 hours after posting. There's no notification, and views that don't come from an account aren't listed.

How the viewer list works

When someone posts a story, Instagram keeps a list of the accounts that open it. The owner sees it by opening their story and tapping the viewer count in the corner. The list shows each account's name and profile photo, and the total number of views.

Instagram doesn't send a notification for each view. The owner only finds out if they check the list, but most people who post stories do.

How long the list is kept

The story itself disappears after 24 hours. The viewer list lasts a little longer: the owner can open it for 48 hours after the story was posted. After that, the names are gone for good and only the total count remains.

Adding a story to a highlight doesn't restart that clock. The viewer list for a story in a highlight still ends 48 hours after the story was first posted, even if the highlight stays on the profile for years.

What the owner can't see

  • Profile visits. Instagram doesn't show anyone who looked at their profile, and no app or setting can.
  • Who viewed a post or reel. Posts show likes and comments; reels show a play count. Neither lists the people who watched.
  • Screenshots of stories. Instagram doesn't report them. More on screenshots.
  • Views without an account. A story opened by a viewer that doesn't log in to Instagram can't be linked to anyone, so it isn't listed.

Does the order of the list mean anything?

Instagram doesn't publish how it orders the list. For stories with only a few viewers it tends to follow the order people watched in. For bigger audiences it isn't chronological, and Instagram has said in the past that it reflects the accounts you interact with most. It isn't a reliable signal of who watched most often.

What about live videos?

During a live video the host sees who joins, by name, as it happens. There is no way to watch a live video from an account without appearing to the host.

How to watch without appearing on the list

Watch the story without your account involved. In the Instagram story viewer on this site, you enter the username and the public stories load without any Instagram login, so there is no account to add to the list. It works for public accounts only.
