Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?

Updated

Short answer

No. Instagram doesn't tell anyone when you screenshot or screen-record their story, post or reel. The exception is disappearing photos and videos sent in direct messages: the sender can be notified, and since October 2024 screenshots of view-once media are blocked.

Stories, posts and reels

Taking a screenshot of a story sends no alert and leaves no trace on the owner's side. The same goes for screen recordings, and for posts and reels in the feed. Instagram tested screenshot alerts for stories in 2018 and dropped the idea.

What the owner does see is the viewer list for their story, for 48 hours after posting. If you watched from your account, your name is on it whether you took a screenshot or not. How the viewer list works.

Direct messages are different

In a direct messageWhat happens
Normal photos, videos and textNo notification
View-once or allow-replay photos and videosScreenshots and screen recordings are blocked; the capture comes out black
Messages in vanish modeThe other person is told when you take a screenshot

Instagram introduced the view-once block in October 2024 as part of its protections against sextortion. It also stopped view-once media from opening on desktop, so the block can't be sidestepped there.

Screenshots taken elsewhere

Instagram can only react to screenshots taken inside its own app. A screenshot of a story watched on this site, or in a browser, isn't visible to Instagram at all.

Saving a story without screenshots

A screenshot loses quality and cuts off video. To keep a public story as the original photo or video, open it in the Instagram story viewer and use the download button in the player. How saving stories works.

Instagram changes these rules from time to time. This page reflects how the app behaves as of September 2026.
