How long do Instagram stories last?

Updated

Short answer

A story is visible for 24 hours. The owner can see who viewed it for 48 hours after posting. If they add it to a highlight, it stays on their profile until they remove it, and a private copy is kept in their archive.

The timeline of a story

WhenWhat happens
PostedThe story appears in followers' story row, and to everyone if the account is public.
24 hours laterThe story disappears for everyone except the owner.
48 hours laterThe list of who viewed it is gone. Only the total view count remains.
Any timeThe owner can add it to a highlight, from the live story or from their archive.

Where stories go after 24 hours

Unless the owner turned it off, Instagram saves every expired story to a private archive. Only the owner can see it. From there they can repost a story, share it as a post, or add it to a highlight.

Nobody else can open another person's archive, including with any tool or website.

Highlights

A highlight is a group of stories the owner chose to keep on their profile. Highlights appear as circles under the bio, each with a title and a cover. They don't expire, so they can be months or years old. Anyone who can see the profile can watch them.

On a public account that means everyone, which is why highlights are often the most useful part of a business or creator profile. Open highlights without an account.

Can you watch a story after 24 hours?

Only if the owner added it to a highlight. Otherwise it's in their private archive, and no website or app can reach it. A site that promises "expired" or "deleted" stories can't deliver them. Stories from the last 24 hours can be watched without an account in the Instagram story viewer.
