Private Instagram viewers: what actually works
No website or app can show you a private Instagram account's stories or posts. Here is what a private profile still shows, why "private viewers" never deliver, and what you can do instead.
What a private account still shows
Making an account private hides its content, not the account itself. Anyone can still see:
- the username and display name
- the profile photo, which opens at full size here
- the bio and the link in it
- how many posts, followers and following the account has
Look up a private account with the search box above and you'll see exactly that, with a note that the rest is for approved followers.
Why private viewers can't work
Instagram sends a private account's stories and posts only to the logged-in accounts that the owner approved as followers. A website isn't one of those accounts, so there is nothing for it to request. That's the whole point of the setting, and Instagram enforces it on its own servers.
Sites that promise otherwise make money from the attempt. Common patterns include a fake progress bar that "decrypts" the profile, a "human verification" step that sends you to surveys or app installs, a request for your own Instagram login, or a paid unlock that shows nothing afterward.
Warning signs
- It asks for your Instagram username and password.
- It wants you to complete an offer, survey or app download before showing anything.
- It shows a progress bar or "scan" before an unlock step.
- It asks for payment to reveal a private account.
Never give another site your Instagram password. It can be used to take over your account.
What you can do instead
- Send a follow request. The owner sees your request and decides. If they accept, you see everything their followers see.
- Look for a public account. Many people keep a public account for work or a hobby alongside a private personal one. Check the bio and linked websites.
- Check the full-size profile photo. It's public on every account and often enough to confirm you've found the right person.

Questions
Why do some sites say they can show private accounts?
Because the promise gets clicks. The site then asks you to finish a survey, install an app, pay, or type in your own Instagram password, and shows nothing in the end.
Is it safe to install a private viewer app?
No app can show a private account. Apps that claim to often ask for your Instagram login, which gives them control of your account.
Can I see a private account's highlights?
No. Highlights on a private account are shown only to approved followers, the same as its stories.
Is there any way to see a private Instagram account?
Only by being an approved follower. Instagram checks this on its own servers, so no website, app or trick can get around it.
Can I see who a private account follows?
No. The follower and following lists of a private account are hidden too. Only the counts are public.
Does a follow request notify the account?
Yes. The owner gets your request and can accept or delete it. If you cancel the request, it disappears from their list.
Can I see a private account's profile photo at full size?
Yes. The profile photo is public on every account. Open it at full size.
